North Charleston police say man shot at car, then tossed gun in front of officer

It’s not a good idea to weave in and out of traffic and then toss a gun out a car window shortly after shooting at people, especially not in front of a police officer.

But that’s what North Charleston police say happened Saturday on Interstate 26.

An officer said he saw a Nissan Altima with Florida tags weaving in and out of traffic from International Boulevard onto I-26 west, according to the incident report released today.

Then the officer saw what looked like a gun fly out of the window and hit the pavement in a shower of sparks.

The officer pulled the Nissan over and a white Buick pulled up. The three occupants said the driver of the Nissan had fired several shots at them on International Boulevard near Tanger Outlets, according to the report.

The officer found a spent 9 mm shell on the floor of the Nissan. A search of the roadway where the gun had been tossed turned up a silver 9 mm Ruger, according to the report.

Jarvis Kendell Behrens, 20, of Bank Street in Mount Pleasant was charged with three counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He’s being held in the Charleston County jail on $300,000 bail.

He was previously convicted of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, according to Charleston County court records.
