Moncks Corner man dies in head-on collision
An 18-year-old Moncks Corner man died early today in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 52, authorities said.
Angel Chavez Salazar was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office. He died from blunt force trauma to the chest.
At 1:30 a.m., a sedan driven by Salazar was traveling north in the southbound lane on U.S. 52 when it collided head-on with a truck, said Coroner Bill Salisbury.
A passenger in the front seat was not injured, he said. The driver of the truck was flown by helicopter to Medical University Hospital with serious injuries.
Salazar was not wearing a seat belt, Salisbury said. It is unclear if the passenger was restrained.
The driver of the overturned truck was wearing a seat belt, he said.
The accident was investigated by the Coroner’s Office and the Moncks Corner Police Department.
