WOODRUFF, S.C. — A police officer has shot and killed a pregnant woman in Woodruff.

Police say an officer made a traffic stop Thursday afternoon when a man in the car fled on foot. While the officer was chasing the man, a woman in the car tried to hit the officer with the car, and the officer shot her.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger says 28-year-old Lacey Denise Lamb died from a gunshot wound. Clevenger says Lamb was 21 weeks pregnant, and her baby did not survive.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. The officer was not hurt. His name has not been released.

Authorities say 33-year-old Matthew Simmons was arrested and charged with driving under suspension. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
