State report: College of Charleston women top Citadel in soccer

MOUNT PLEASANT — The College of Charleston women’s soccer team beat rival the Citadel, 1-0, at Patriots Point on Wednesday to qualify for the Southern Conference tournament in a game marred by three red cards after a physical altercation broke out.

The Cougars (6-11-1, 5-5-1 SoCon) earned the No. 7 seed and will play the opening round at No. 2-seed Samford on Sunday.

Charleston, which was outshot, 18-17, scored 1:37 into the match. Former Bishop England star Kate Twohig took a free kick from near the corner flag and Haley Hutchens headed the ball through the crowd to an unmarked Maryam Buazza, who scored the only goal.

Eli Sarasola had seven saves for the Cougars.

Wrestling
Two-time SoCon champions Turtogtokh Luvsandorj (174 pounds) and Odie Delaney (heavyweight) of The Citadel, along with Jordan Dix (149), were named to the All-SoCon preseason team as selected by the coaches. Chattanooga picked up four-first-place votes and 46 total points to edge out The Citadel by two. The Bulldogs’ season starts Nov. 3 when they host The Citadel Open.

Swimming
College of Charleston junior swimmer Sarah Boyle was named the CCSA female swimmer of the week. Boyle set a pool record this past weekend at Georgia Southern as she won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.96. She also took first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.55) and the 100-yard butterfly (58.0).

Sailing
The coed College of Charleston sailing team received four first-place votes and is ranked No. 2 in the country behind Georgetown in the Sailing World’s College Rankings.

The women’s team is ranked seventh.

The Cougars will participate this weekend at the Victorian Urn Intersectional in New London, Conn., hosted by Connecticut College and the SAISA Fall Coed Championships in St. Petersburg, Fla.
