WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Clemson star receiver Sammy Watkins did not start tonight’s game at Wake Forest, a disciplinary decision after Watkins was late for a meeting Wednesday.

But it didn’t matter.

Watkins missed the first four plays and then entered the game to catch five passes for 177 yards and a touchdown in the first half Thursday, to lead Clemson to a 28-0 halftime lead.

The yardage is a career high for Watkins. Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd has thrown five touchdown passes, each to a difference receiver.

The Clemson defense might have played its best half of football, recording four sacks.
