Charleston police make arrest in weekend killing
Charleston police have charged a 23-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of a man near Line and Nassau streets on Saturday.
Darren Nathaniel Simmons, of 11 Hampden Court, is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Simmons, who is on probation for a burglary charge, is being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center, according to police spokesman Charles Francis.
Police dispatch received a call about 6:15 a.m. about a sick or injured person near Line and Nassau. Officers arrived on scene and found Albert Louis Brown, 37, lying on the sidewalk. Brown died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to a police report.
Police have not revealed how they tied Simmons to the killing or a possible motive.
