College of Charlestons Wood, Topitzer earn CCSA weekly honors
College of Charleston’s Alex Wood was selected as the CCSA men’s swimmer week, while College of Charleston’s Michael Topitzer earned diver of the week honors for meets competed Oct.8-Oct. 14, the league announced Wednesday.
Wood had a great start to his collegiate career against Georgia Tech. He placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.55 seconds. Wood finished fourth in the 200-yard free and fourth in the 100-yard free with times of 1:45.72 and 48.51, respectively.
Topitzer finished first in the 3-meter board with a score of 190.05 and second in the 1-meter event at 187.90.
Basketball
Wingate was picked by SAC coaches as the preseason favorite to win the conference title in 2012-13, while Newberry was selected third and Anderson fifth.
Newberry was fourth in the SAC last season, going 16-12 overall. Reigning SAC Freshman of the Year Dondray Walker is back for Newberry after averaging 16.4 points per game in 2011-12.
Lincoln Memorial was picked second. Carson-Newman was fourth, with Lenoir-Rhyne sixth, Tusculum seventh, Catawba eighth, Brevard ninth and Mars Hill 10th.
Hockey
The South Carolina Stingrays will wear special jerseys for Military Appreciation Night for Saturday’s game against the Ontario Reign at the North Charleston Coliseum. The jerseys will be auctioned off live after the 7 p.m. game.
During Military Appreciation Night, the USO will be accepting donations to send overseas. WWE superstar Sgt. Slaughter will sign autographs and take pictures with fans during the game.
