RiverDogs put baseball spotlight on youngsters at St. Andrew’s Parks

The Charleston RiverDogs’ official baseball season is over, but the fun hasn’t ended.

Mascot Charlie T. RiverDog, public address announcer Ken Carrington and members of the club’s promotional staff were at St. Andrew’s Parks and Playground’s Billy Peek Field on Oct. 9 for a youth baseball game between Gosnell Insurance and Palmetto Exterminators.

Charlie interacted with spectators, hugging and hamming it up with kids and adults alike and passing out RiverDogs promotional items. Carrington announced the 9- and 10-year-old players who had their own “walk-up” music played especially for them as they came to bat.

“We’ve been doing it for three or four years,” RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols said of the “Spotlight Game” program.

Once or twice during the year, the RiverDogs take the Spotlight Game to the community. Echols said

“The parents and kids absolutely love it. We try to bring some unique fun and entertainment to a youth game,” Echols said. “It’s a good branding opportunity for the RiverDogs. It’s really about trying to have a lot of fun at a youth game.”
