Folly Beach Challenge: Oct. 20. 8 a.m. start. Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Hit the beach to compete in a challenging off-road triathlon. Paddle a 3-mile stretch of the Folly River, bike approximately 8.5 miles on Folly Beach, and then run a 3-mile section of the beach. New this year is a special awards division for stand-up paddleboards. Online registration ends Oct. 19. Late registration, if available, will take place at packet pick up on Oct. 19. Race-day registration not available. Team registration is available; three participants required per team and one member of the group must be at least 18 years of age. For ages 16 and up. Fee: Teams: $92/$76 CCR Discount & Individual: $44/$36 CCR Discount.
rUNdead 5K: Oct. 27. 5 p.m. start. Old Towne Creek County Park. Zombies are invading West Ashley during this new 5K obstacle run. The inaugural rUNdead 5k will feature a race on the trails of Old Towne Creek County Park (adjacent to Charles Towne Landing). Online registration ends Oct. 24. If available, late registration will take place between 3-4:30 p.m. on Oct. 27. Participants ages 10-15 can register for this course, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Fee: $40/$32 CCR Discount.

Oct. 19: Lowcountry Biodiversity and You at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Ever wondered what goes on behind the brick walls of the 54,000-square foot USDA Vegetable Laboratory on Highway 17? Meet the founding members of the Lowcountry Biodiversity Foundation, tour their laboratory and learn about the latest educational efforts of this newly formed foundation. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 19: After-School Adventures: Archery at Palmetto Islands County Park. 4:30-6 p.m. Enjoy a fun afternoon while you learn safe practices of archery and get your chance to shoot a bull’s-eye. Age: 8-12. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 20, 24, 27, 31: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30 a.m.-noon. Walk through many distinct habitats will allow group to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders.
Oct. 20: Get Fit with Fido: Paws and Pose Doga Class at James Island County Park. 9-10 a.m. Regular practice brings greater flexibility, good health, and peace of mind for you and your dog. All fitness levels welcome. Limit one dog per human. All dogs must be on a leash. No retractable leashes. Age: 18 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount.
Oct. 20: Colonial Charleston: Carolina Gold Rice at Wannamaker County Park. 10-11:30 a.m. Examine the legacy behind rice production; early South Carolina’s most profitable and influential industry. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 20: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 101 at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. This class is designed to introduce you to the world of climbing. Learn gear, basic knots, technique and how to belay. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $30/$25 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 23: After-School Adventures: Rock Climb at Palmetto Islands County Park. 4:30-6 p.m. Come out after school and climb. Learn basic climbing skills and have some fun. Age: 6-12. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 23-25: Kayak Rolling and Rescues: Introduction to Kayak Rescues. 6:30-8:30 p.m. This two-part class series will allow you to practice a variety of self- and assisted rescues. Group will use sea kayaks for the practice session in a pool. Participants ages 13-15 may register for one of these courses, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperon. Age: 13 & up. Fee: $48/$40 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 24, 31: College Days at James Island County Park. Noon-7 p.m. Students will receive a free harness rental and shoe rental with the regular price of admission. Registration is not necessary. Fee: $10.
Oct. 25: After School Adventures: Rock Climb at James Island County Park. 4:30-6 p.m. In the classroom all day? Well come out after school and climb with us. Learn basic climbing skills and have some fun. Age: 6-12. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
Oct. 26: Beachwalker Bird Walks at Beachwalker Park. 9:30 a.m.-noon. Group will hike nearly two miles of pristine beach looking for a variety of birds, including raptors and songbirds. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: free; however, pre-registration is required.
Oct. 26: After-School Adventures: Archery at Wannamaker County Park. 4:30-6 p.m. Learn safe practices of archery and get your chance to shoot a bull’s-eye. Age: 8-12. Fee: $6/$5 CCR Discount. Pre-registration required.
