Fungal meningitis cases and deaths continue to rise
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday reported 257 cases of fungal infection and 20 deaths in 16 states linked to the tainted steroid methylprednisolone acetate made by New England Compounding Center.
All but two of the infections are fungal meningitis. The others are fungal infections from injection of the contaminated steroid into a joint.
On Wednesday, the CDC reported 243 cases of fungal meningitis, two fungal joint infections and 19 deaths in 15 states.
South Carolina has not had a confirmed case of fungal meningitis or fungal joint infection linked to the suspect steroid.
