Auditor among Charleston County’s hottest races
Both the Democrat and the Republican vying for the Charleston County Auditor post say the job is essentially nonpartisan and administrative — but both agree their chance of winning on Nov. 6 will be shaped by how county voters break in this year’s presidential race —and the coattail effect down the ticket.
But Paul Gawrych, a Republican and former Mount Pleasant Town Councilman, and Peter Tecklenburg, a Democrat and former transit planner, have active campaigns to reach beyond their party’s core supporters.
The Auditor calculates property tax rates and mails out bills. The full-time job, one of several elected county courthouse posts, pays about $90,000 a year and entails supervising a staff of about 30 employees.
It rarely ranks among the county’s hottest political contests, but that has changed this year, after incumbent Republican Auditor Peggy Moseley got criticized for her role in the tardiness of tax bills and other issues.
