New compost plant to hire 25 in Berkeley County
MONCKS CORNER — A North Carolina company has picked Berkeley County as the site of its seventh organics recycling facility.
McGill Environmental Systems of N.C. Inc. said today it plans to be operating in the Lowcountry by the end of 2013. It will hire up to 25 employees.
The indoor compost manufacturing plant will be built on the site of Berkeley County Water and Sanitation’s yard waste operation off U.S. Highway 52 near Moncks Corner.
The project is a public-private collaboration between the sanitation agency and Harrells, N.C.-based McGill. The facility will be built on county land but owned and operated by the company.
It will process a wide variety of biodegradable materials from municipal, commercial and industrial providers for use as feedstocks in the production of McGill’s line of compost products, which are sold to the sports turf, landscaping and erosion control markets.
