South Carolina gets commitment from Justin McKie, son of former star BJ
New South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin received a commitment from shooting guard Justin McKie of Irmo. He is the son of former USC guard BJ McKie, the Gamecocks’ all-time leading scorer now in his second season as an assistant at Charleston Southern.
McKie is USC’s third commitment for the Class of 2013. Martin has one spot left. McKie also had scholarship offers from Memphis, Presbyterian, Samford, Winthrop and Florida Gulf Coast, according to Rivals.com.
Martin’s highest-rated recruit for 2013 is wing player Sindarius Thornwell of Lancaster. He is rated by Rivals as the No. 10 small forward and No. 40 overall recruit in the class. He is USC’s highest-rated recruit in the history of Rivals’ database, which goes back through 2003.
Stingrays earn win in exhibition finale
Defenseman Ryan Turek scored the game-winning goal in overtime and goaltender John Havrilack made seven saves to help the South Carolina Stingrays win, 3-2, over the Greenville Road Warriors at the Carolina Ice Palace.
Alex MacLeod and Hunter Bishop also scored for the Stingrays, who open the regular season against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7 p.m. Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum.
CSU freshman Parrott earns Big South honor
Charleston Southern middle blocker Meredith Parrott was named the volleyball freshman of the week from the Big South Conference.
Cougars doubles team wins flight at Virginia
The College of Charleston doubles team of Brice Allanic and Sebastian Lopez won the Orange flight title at the UVa Fall Classic in Charlottesville, Va.
