SAPAKOFF COLUMN: Week 7 SEC football Best and Worst - Clowney, Gillislee, Chizik job security and “Sandstorm”
Jadeveon Clowney. 6.5 sacks and counting for the best player on the best defensive line in the country. Now the South Carolina Gamecocks’ front wall needs a nickname.
Mike Gillislee. The Florida running back rushed for 146 yards and scored two touchdowns last week against LSU.
Mike Slive and SEC headquarters. With Florida State’s loss in Raleigh, the SEC has a major obstacle out of the way in its quest for a seventh straight national title and second consecutive All-SEC matchup in the BCS Championship Game. An Oregon-FSU title game loomed as a possibility without an undefeated SEC champion; now Alabama (or South Carolina) can probably afford a loss.
A.J. McCarron. Still underrated. The Alabama junior ranks fifth in the nation in quarterback rating (177.0).
“Sandstorm” mania. The techno pop import from Finland is pretty annoying, particularly to non-Gamecock fans at Williams-Brice Stadium. Georgia head coach Mark Richt made sure the Bulldogs heard plenty of the song in practice last week but a Georgia fan complained after the 35-7 beat down that “Sandstorm” contains subliminal and hypnotic messages that apparently don’t blend well with playing football against South Carolina.
Gene Chizik. Auburn with its 1-4 start is 9-9 since winning the national title. “I’m never concerned about my job security,” Chizik said Saturday after a 24-7 loss to Arkansas.
LSU’s offense. Or lack thereof. The Tigers scored 18 total points against Auburn and Florida and are tied for last place in the SEC (with Auburn) in scoring offense in league games.
SEC SOS. The conference is No. 2 (behind the Big 12) in the Sagarin ratings and the SEC’s weak bottom half isn’t going to help with strength of schedule going forward.
Kentucky. Attendance at the 27-14 loss to Mississippi State was announced at 49,498. Sure, a 12:21 kickoff. And the horses at Keeneland. But the season peaked for Joker’s Wildcats at halftime of the South Carolina game.
Cam Newton. Sorry for piling on Auburn. Hey, maybe if the Carolina Panthers hired Gene Chizik and Chizik hired Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator …
