A Berkeley High School student died this morning after a wreck near Moncks Corner.
The Berkeley County Coronerís Office identified him as 16-year-old Ryan Driggers of Bonneau. He was a junior at Berkeley High School and was the son of Shawn E. Ruff and Jennifer Driggers-Hayes, according to Dial-Murray Funeral Home in Moncks Corner.
Driggers was a passenger in a pickup truck that tried to pass a car and hit a tree, according to Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.
According to Collins, a Ford Ranger pickup and a four-door Saturn were traveling west on Cooper Store Road about 10:20 p.m. Saturday, when the pickup driver tried to pass the Saturn. The pickup driver saw a car coming, tried to get back in the lane, made contact with the Saturn, ran off the road and hit a tree.
Driggers was taken to Medical University Hospital and died as a result of his injuries, according to the Coronerís Office.
The driver of the pickup may have been a juvenile, according to Collins, and was not identified today. The Highway Patrol is investigating and considering whether to file charges, Collins said.
There was no indication in the Highway Patrolís report that the pickup driver or anybody in the Saturn was injured.
