Summerville defeats Fort Dorchester, 17-10
SUMMERVILLE — And the beat goes on.
Summerville defeated rival Fort Dorchester, 17-10, Friday night in front of about 7,000 fans at McKissick Field. It was the Green Wave’s 13th straight victory over the Patriots and 20th in 22 games against their Dorchester County foe since the series started in 1994.
The game came down to the last play with Fort Dorchester quarterback Baptiste Stagger’s desperation pass falling incomplete at the goal line.
Summerville needed some impressive plays by freshman quarterback Sawyer Bridges. Late in the game with a third-and-10 at the Summerville 22, Bridges completed a screen to Jerrod Tucker, who avoided three tackles and broke off a big run. A personal foul at the end of the play gave the Green Wave the ball at the Fort Dorchester 28.
Then Bridge completed a 25-yard pass to Shawn Smith, and two plays later Bridges scored on a 1-yard run with 1:02 left in the game.
“Bridges is a freshman but he plays with a lot of maturity,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “Before he gets out of here, he’s going to be one of the better ones we’ve had come through. They got a few breaks and we got a few breaks. Thankfully, we won. We needed a win.”
Summerville running back Davon Anderson was out with a knee injury, but Tucker was more than capable of carrying the football.
Summerville marched 75 yards on its second possession of the game with Tucker, who had 31 yards on the ground, scoring on a one-yard run with 3:25 left in the first quarter.
The victory gave the Green Wave a 3-4 record, including 1-0 in Region 8-AAAA. McKissick picked up his 597th career victory. Fort Dorchester fell to 3-4, 0-1.
The Patriots turned the ball over twice were penalized 13 times for 135 yards.
“It was close at the end,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “But we counted 14 penalties in the first half to three for them. It was pretty much the same in the second half. You can’t make that many penalties and win.”
Fort Dorchester was in excellent position to tie the score on its first possession of the second half, but had to settle for Luke Philyaw’s 30-yard field goal with 5:54 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 7-3.
Patriot running back Charleston Loftland broke off a 63-yard run to key a drive where the Patriots had first-and-goal at the Wave 1. But three plays lost 12 yards and Philyaw salvaged the drive with his kick.
The Green Wave pushed the lead back to 7 when Parker Cleveland kicked a 27-yard field goal with 11:19 left in the game.
But Fort Dorchester managed a big play on defense when Anthony Foreman recovered a fumble at the Green Wave 35 to set up a score.
Daitwan Commordore scored on a 7-yard touchdown run with 6:35 left in the game to make it 10-10.
Summerville’s Darren Smalls returned the kickoff 68 yards to the Fort Dorchester 28. Tucker carried three times for six yards, but Cleveland’s 38-yard field goal attempt was wide right with 4:45 left in the game.
