Local garden club, veterans groups to sponsor Blue Star Highway Marker
The Town & Village Garden Club of Moncks Corner and Pinopolis is gearing up for its 62nd year with several area beautification projects.
The club’s latest project is a Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker to be erected in the Moncks Corner area. Local veterans’ groups, American Legion Post 126 and VFW Post 9509, have donated $1,200 toward the $1,350 marker.
The National Garden Clubs is the parent organization for Blue Star Memorial Highways, which pays tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces and was started in 1945 after World War II. The blue star was used on service flags during the war to honor a service member.
Town & Village’s ongoing projects include area school gardens; Coastal Carolina Fair Flower Show, Yard of the Month; floral arrangements for Berkeley County Library, Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast and Relay for Life dinner; tree-planting and flower pots in downtown Moncks Corner; holiday decorations in the historical Stony Landing House at Santee Canal Park; and sponsoring local teens at Camp Wildwood, an outdoor, environmental camp, sponsored in part by the Garden Club of South Carolina.
Last year, the club was recognized at the Garden Club of South Carolina’s State Convention for its yearbook and fair flower show.
The club meets second Thursday of each month, except for summer break ,at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pinopolis. Refreshments and fellowship start at 6 p.m., followed by an educational program at 6:30 p.m. and business meeting at 7 p.m.
