New Charleston AFB air wing change of command ceremony set

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON -The 437th Airlift Wing will welcome new commander Col. Darren Hartford, and bid farewell to departing leader Col. Erik Hansen, during a formal change of command ceremony tomorrow at the Charleston Air Force Base.

Col. Hartford, who currently serves as the assistant director of operations at Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott AFB, Ill., will assume his duties at the ceremony.

The airlift wing is responsible for providing the airland or airdrop of troops and passengers, military equipment, cargo and aeromedical airlift in operations worldwide. Under Hansen’s leadership, the wing performed more than 31,378 missions flying 77,775 hours, carrying 410,579 passengers and 341,405 tons of cargo.

Hansen, who assumed command in May 2011, is scheduled to transfer to Headquarters U.S. Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany, and assume the position of inspector general.
