Republican voters in the newly drawn Senate 41 district will head to the polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today to pick their candidate for the Nov. 6 election.

The two Republicans on the ballot include former Charleston County Councilman Paul Thurmond and incumbent Sen. Walter Hundley.

Todayís race is a runoff after no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the three-way primary on Sept. 18. Charleston businessman Wally Burbage placed third and was knocked out.

The winner of todayís election will face Democrat and former Charleston City Councilman Paul Tinkler next month, depending on what the courts do.

Both Hundley and Thurmond are among the defendants in a new federal lawsuit questioning the legality of this special primary seat. A three-judge panel is set to hear that case on Oct. 16.

District 41 includes much of West Ashley and parts of James Island, North Charleston and Summerville. It previously was represented by Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, who resigned his Senate post after Lt. Gov. Ken Ard was indicted, pleaded guilty to ethics violations and stepped down.

Some military and overseas voters in the district are absentee ballots with all Nov. 6 races except this Senate contest, which will be sent to them as a separate ballot after the runoff is settled, Board of Elections and Voter Registration Director Joseph Debney said.
