Thurmond defeated Sen. Walter Hundley by a 1,771 to 723 margin, according to full, unofficial results.
Turnout was lower than two weeks ago, when fewer than 5 percent of registered voters voted in the three-way primary.
Thurmond said he appreciated Republican voters’ willingness to turn out yet again and looked forward to pointing out the differences between him and the Democratic challenger during the next month.
Hundley is serving the final few months of Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell’s old Senate term and previously announced he was not campaigning. He said he remains in the race in case courts determine that Thurmond, who lost in court this summer, is again deemed ineligible.
“I’m at peace with myself,” Hundley said. “The only people I feel sorry for are people who don’t understand what’s going on. ... We’re playing in several different courts here. People in Senate 41 don’t really understand what’s going on. It’s ‘Star Trek’ — where no politician has gone before.”
Thurmond will face Democrat and former Charleston City Councilman Paul Tinkler on Nov. 6, if the courts allow it.
Separate legal actions pending in federal court and the S.C. Supreme Court still could reshape the outcome.
