New Shem Creek Bridge on Bowman Road to open tonight
The new Shem Creek Bridge on Bowman Road will open to the public for the first time tonight at 11 p.m.
The project doubled the bridge’s lanes to four, and constructed five-foot wide sidewalks in both directions, county spokeswoman Tracey Amick said.
Left turns are not allowed from East Frontage Road onto Bowman Road, or from Bowman Road onto East Frontage Road for safety reasons, Amick said.
The new bridge is a part of Mount Pleasant’s Johnnie Dodds Boulevard Improvements Project, and is expected to improve traffic flow in and out of Mount Pleasant by 2013.
The project is funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax. It is managed by Charleston County Government’s RoadWise Program with help from the town of Mount Pleasant and the state Department of Transportation, Amick said.
