New fees eyed for Memorial Waterfront Park events
MOUNT PLEASANT — Hosting an event at Memorial Waterfront Park could be getting a lot more expensive because of the popularity of the venue.
An up to 10-fold hike in the fee to book a party at the park received preliminary approval Monday from the Town Council Economic Development Committee.
Staffers said the measure is needed because the demand for park events is straining town staff and cutting into public time to go there and relax.
“The enjoyment of the park is being put at risk,” said Town Administrator Eric DeMoura.
The current special event permit fee ranges from $50 to $100. The new fees to book the park would be $200 for groups between 25 and 249 people, $400 for a crowd between 250 and 499 folks and $1,000 for a gathering between 500 and 2,000 individuals.
“Our park has been inundated with requests for fundraisers, runs and festivals,” said Ashley Richardson, community development and tourism officer.
Also endorsed by the committee was a proposal to designate one Saturday per month for general public use of park green space.
