Teen rescued from bell tower at downtown church
A 15-year-old boy in a senior high youth group at a historic Charleston church Sunday night had to be rescued from the bell tower after he fell while touring the tower and injured his shoulder, authorities said.
Police, EMS and fire officials were called to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church about 7:30 p.m. after the boy, whose identity was not released, became unable to get down from the tower after injuring himself, said Mark Ruppel, Charleston fire spokesman.
During the tour, the church bells rang and the boy was startled and fell, dislocating his shoulder, said Charles Francis, spokesman for the Charleston Police Department.
King Street was closed to traffic between Hutson and Calhoun streets as rescuers from the Charleston County Rescue Squad, St. Andrews Fire Department and Charleston Fire Department helped the boy down the tower’s stairs. Crews brought him down about 8:30 p.m. He was treated on the scene by EMS and released to his family.
