A Johns Island woman was killed early today when she apparently lost control of a car she was driving and went off the road.

About 4:30 a.m., Charleston County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Maybank Highway near McCullough Dam Road for a report of a single-vehicle wreck, sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said. A Lincoln Town Car had gone off the road and struck a tree, Brady said. The driver suffered fatal injuries. There were no other occupants.

Yolande Champion, 31, died at the scene from injuries suffered in the wreck, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kimberly Rhoton said.

The collision is being investigated by the Coroner’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division.
