Man impersonates immigration official, robs two men
Two men thought they were obeying an immigration official Monday, but ended up getting robbed instead.
A 29-year-old told North Charleston police that a man in a Jeep Cherokee pulled in front of his home on West Montague Avenue and asked if he had seen a man with a dog.
The resident answered no, but instead of leaving, the man pulled into the homeís driveway and approached him, an incident report states.
A second man, 35, who lives at the home, stepped outside to check on the unfolding situation.
Masquerading as an immigration official, the suspect asked the men to provide their IDs and documentation, the report said.
The tattooed suspect wore a white tank top and jeans, but he flashed a badge at the men, prompting them to fall prey to the ruse, the report says.
The men obeyed the suspect when he told them to put their hands on a wall, and allowed him to search through their pockets, the report said.
The suspect removed both of the menís wallets, car keys, cellphones and almost $500 in cash, the report said.
A third man walked outside of the residence after the search, then ran through the homeís back door, the report said.
The suspect welcomed the distraction caused by that manís escape and made one of his own, fleeing toward his Jeep with the menís possessions in hand, the report said.
The men told police the vehicle went in the direction of Dorchester Road shortly after 5 p.m. However, they didnít call police until almost 11 p.m., the report said.
The men waited to call police until they got a chance to tell an English-speaking friend what happened.
They were unsure if the man was actually with immigration and wanted her opinion on the matter, the report said.
The men described the suspect as a white man with blond hair, a thin goatee, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and 140 pounds.
The case is still under investigation and a suspect has not been identified, North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.
