University of South Carolina finds mold in dorm
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina has moved some students after finding mold in a dorm.
The State newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/Q9tqo5) that students began noticing mold in Sims dorm rooms about two weeks ago.
The school alerted parents and began inspecting and testing in the 73-year-old dorm.
Officials say three of the dorm’s 117 rooms required enough cleaning to move six students. School spokesman Wes Hickman says nine other students with a history of respiratory problems also moved out.
Hickman says there are no plans to move the other 219 students.
Sims and two other dorms in what’s known as the Women’s Quad are to get a $27 million renovation next summer.
Housing director Kristen Kennedy says broken insulation in several closets and excessive rains led to the mold.
