Lanes reopen on Don Holt Bridge after car fire snarls traffic

All the lanes of the Don Holt Bridge are open again, and traffic is crawling from North Charleston to Mount Pleasant.

A car fire snarled traffic on the bridge this afternoon.

The fire around the Virginia Avenue exit was reported about 4:20 p.m., North Charleston Fire Department spokeswoman Bianca Sancic said.

Cell-phone photos showed thick, black smoke billowing up through the girders of the bridge.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 4:42 p.m., Sancic said. No injuries were reported.

One lane opened again about 4:45 p.m., and all lanes were open by 5:30 p.m. Traffic is backed up on Interstate 26 and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge as a a result of the closure.
