Folly Beach park could open again as early as June

FOLLY BEACH — The closed, eroding beachfront park here could re-open as soon as June, officials think, despite the damage that now leaves highs surfs washing out remnants of the old parking lot.

Charleston County Parks and Recreation has applied for permits to renourish the beach and build a groin 200 feet out to sea.

The project would cost $3 million, but parks officials have the funds in bond money and reserves.

The park might not fully be restored by June, said Tom O’Rourke, Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission executive director. But officials hope to have at least temporary bathrooms in place.

Work couldn’t begin until March at the earliest, because of federal threatened species shorebirds that graze the winter beach.
