Shoppers and diners at The Market at Oakland Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant got some unexpected excitement on Saturday morning.

At 9:35 a.m., black clouds rose about 75 feet in the air from an older model van engulfed in flames. The van was parked within 20 feet of the front door of the center’s Wells Fargo bank branch

The Mount Pleasant Fire Department was on the scene within minutes and put out the fire as dozens of people watched from a safe distance away from the van, which was starting to make loud popping noises.

No one on the scene appeared to own the van, a Plymouth Grand Voyager with a South Carolina license plate.

Firefighters declined to comment on the fire. Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
