Store employee accused in burglary he reported
An employee of a sporting goods store who reported a burglary last week was the one who stole from the store’s safe, authorities said.
Drew Barter, 24, of Staffwood Road on Johns Island was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree burglary.
Barter told Charleston police on Sept. 10 that he arrived at Dick’s Sporting Goods at 2070 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. and found the front door open and alarm disarmed.
Employees reported that money was missing from the safe. They told police that in order to gain access to the store, the safe room and the safe, someone would need two separate keys, the alarm code and the combination to the safe. Only store managers and assistant managers have that access.
