Charleston man charged in early Thursday holdup attempt

Charleston police arrested a South Tracy Street man Friday accused of holding up and shooting a 23-year-old man the day before.

Tyreece Smith, 22, is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and attempted armed robbery. He is being held in the Cannon Detention Center.

Javanti Goodwintold police he was leaving a store on King Street about 12:30 a.m. Thursday when he was approached by a man with a handgun who demanded his money. He ran and the gunman shot him twice in the back of his legs.

Goodwin made his way to a Moultrie Street residence for help. He was taken to Medical University Hospital to be treated.
