Mount Pleasant law firm manager charged with defrauding former employer
A federal grand jury has charged the former office manager of a Mount Pleasant-based law firm with defrauding her ex-employer.
Amanda E. Michel took about $224,000 in unauthorized wages from The Mason Law Firm and electronically transferred some of the proceeds to pay personal expenses, according to an indictment filed recently in U.S. District Court in Charleston.
She is charged with one count of wire fraud.
Michel, 34, was responsible for all of the firm’s financial accounts. Prosecutors said she defrauded the personal injury firm over seven years, starting in 2003, “by means of false pretenses and representations.”
The Sept. 12 indictment said Michel altered and deleted checks to conceal the large amount of payments she was making to herself. She then deposited the money into a personal bank account and used some of it to pay credit cards bills and other expenses.
