Former Charleston County Councilman Paul Thurmond, incumbent Sen. Walter Hundley and Charleston businessman Wally Burbage appear on the ballot. If no one gets a majority of the vote, the top two will face off Oct. 2.
Voting was light at the start and may remain that way as rain arrives, said Charleston County elections director Joe Debney. “It looks like a low turnout day,” he said this morning.
Today’s special primary was brought about by recent court rulings, which found that Thurmond was not an eligible candidate when he won the June 12 GOP Senate 41 primary but that the Republican Party could start from scratch and hold a new primary.
The confusing nature of these lawsuits, combined with a likely chance of rain and an unusual late September date, all are expected to keep turnout low.
The district includes precincts from James Island to West Ashley to southern Dorchester County.
The Republican winner is expected to face off against Democrat and former Charleston City Councilman Paul Tinkler on Nov. 6.
