A 54-year-old man who was fatally injured in a traffic crash Sunday in Awendaw has been identified as Charles Melbert of McClellanville, according to Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said Melbert’s vehicle was going south on U.S. Highway 17 when it went off the road near Steed Creek Road and overturned around 12:20 p.m. Rescuers had to extract Melbert from the vehicle.
He died later Sunday.
A single lane of the highway was closed for two hours as deputies investigated the wreck. No one else was involved.
