Charleston police officer charged after wreck
A Charleston City police officer was charged with disregarding a stop sign after a traffic accident tonight.
The accident happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at America and Blake streets, according to Highway Patrol Cpl. Bob Beres.
The Highway Patrol routinely investigates accidents involving police officers.
According to Beres, Officer Shelby August was driving a 2004 Crown Victoria police car south on America Street when she went through a stop sign and hit a 2007 Chevrolet being driven east on Blake Street by 48-year-old Tony Johnson of Mount Pleasant.
Johnson was injured and taken to Medical University Hospital. August and another officer with her were not hurt.
August was charged with disregarding a stop sign, Beres said.
