Halftime update: South Carolina 21, Alabama-Birmingham 6
SOUTH CAROLINA 21, ALABAMA-BIRMINGHAM 6
Star so far: Free safety D.J. Swearinger was in the right place at the right time, and scored USC’s second defensive touchdown in as many weeks – a 65-yard fumble recovery after the ball slipped away from UAB quarterback Jonathan Perry. The score put USC up 7-3 in the first quarter.
Other standouts: USC WR Ace Sanders (three catches, 56 yards, one touchdown); USC QB Connor Shaw (8 of 14, 107 yards, one touchdown, one interception); UAB WR Patrick Hearn (three catches, 39 yards).
Injuries: USC linebacker Reggie Bowens got the wind knocked out of him on the first play, but returned. With 1:44 left in the half, USC quarterback Connor Shaw was hit as he threw and left the game with what appeared to be an aggravation of a right (throwing) shoulder injury that sidelined him for last week’s game against East Carolina. Shaw bruised the shoulder in the Aug. 30 season opener at Vanderbilt. Dylan Thompson, who played in Shaw’s place against ECU, replaced him after he left.
