Charleston is installing bike corrals downtown. The corral on King Street at the John and Hutson street block will be completed by next week.

King Street will be home to the state’s first bike corral, providing Charleston bicyclists with 10 new parking spaces downtown.

The corral is being installed on the block between John and Hutson streets, said city spokeswoman Barbara Vaughn. She said three other corrals are planned for King at Hasell Street, upper St. Philip Street and Concord Street near Waterfront Park. Bike corrals are growing in popularity across the nation, and Vaughn said they were recently installed in Savannah and Raleigh.

“Bike corrals not only serve the customers of businesses on the greatest shopping and dining streets in the country, they serve as a signal to everyone that bicycling is an important part of our community,” Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said in a statement. “Promoting bicycling downtown and in other parts of the city helps address the problems associated with congested areas,”
