Wando improves to 5-0 with win over Summerville
Summerville — For the first time in 22 seasons, the Wando Warriors are 5-0 in football.
Wando overcame an early touchdown and defeated Summerville, 24-14, at Memorial Stadium’s John McKissick Field behind senior quarterback Christian Hart’s 231 yards passing and Casey Clawson’s three field goals.
Wando won despite missing on several scoring chances in the game and managing only a field goal in a lackluster second half.
“It’s great to be 5-0, but we’ve got a long way to go,” said Wando head coach Jimmy Noonan. “We left a lot on the field out there tonight. We did enough to win and we are certainly happy to be 5-0 right now, but we know we’re going to see a lot of missed opportunities when we put those tapes in on Sunday.”
Summmerville (1-3) got on the board first when junior running back Davon Anderson broke free on a 40-yard run with 5:28 to play in the first quarter.
Anderson finished the half with 130 yards, but was limited to just 14 in the second half.
“He’s a good back and he’s going to get his yards, but I thought we did a nice job of stopping the running game in the second half,” said Noonan.
Wando proceeded to run off 21 straight points on a pair of touchdown passes by Hart and two Clawson field goals, taking a 21-7 lead at the break. The last score came with 22 seconds left in the half on sophomore Kenny Waring’s 14-yard reception from Hart.
That drive was set up by a botched fake punt attempt by Summerville, giving Wando possession at midfield with 1:44 to play.
Clawson added a third field goal on Wando’s first drive of the second half.
Summerville, which did not earn a first down in the second half until the 5:40 mark of the fourth quarter, tacked on a late touchdown on a Sawyer Bridges to Johnston McCurry 40-yard pass with 3:47 to play in the game.
“We have a pretty decent football team,” said Noonan. “We have a few good players and we have a team that works very hard and has great chemistry. We realize we’ve got to get a lot better with the people we have left on the schedule. We have to do a better job in the red zone of finishing off drives and we will. We are still a work in progress, and we have good kids who will work to get it done.”
