Mayor Summey to cook breakfast to support the Teacher’s Supply Closet

North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey will be serving up free breakfast to the public at Cork Neighborhood Bistro 8-10 a.m. Friday to benefit the Teacher’s Supply Closet. Donations will be accepted

The Teachers’ Supply Closet had extensive water damage and lost many supplies Aug. 28 when heavy rain and flooding throughout the area caused a blockage in a drain pipe, which flooded the roof and subsequently the Closet.

Summey began planning the fundraiser after meeting with TSC leaders over the summer about their expansion plans to serve North Charleston area schools. However, the event is now more important than ever.

“We have been working hard to get our facility back up and running and are so grateful to Mayor Summey and his staff for holding this event to help us recover. We look forward to meeting some new supporters,” said TSC Executive Director Deborah Hanlon.

Kelly Golden, morning host at radio station 94.3 WSC, will broadcast live from the event. WSC’s sister station, WEZL, also will feature call-ins from the event as part of the popular morning show “TJ & the Morning Crew.”

Teachers’ Supply Closet is a nonprofit organization that provides free school supplies to teachers in the tri-county area who work at schools where 88 percent of the students are on the free or reduced lunch program. Currently, 34 schools are at the 88 percent poverty index (based on free and reduced lunch program statistics).

The Teachers’ Supply Closet is at 1401 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Suite 11, West Ashley. Cork Neighborhood Bistro is at 1067 E. Montague Ave., North Charleston.
