Middleton Place opening new space for agriculture
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Middleton Place outside Charleston is opening a new area where visitors can get a glimpse of agriculture in years past.
The new area opening Thursday allows visitors to the plantation on the Ashley River to see what it was like to polish rice, process indigo and tend a garden.
The event also features a series of events focused on the cultivation of rice. In colonial times rice was a major crop in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Creation of the new exhibit area was made possible by a $15,000 grant from the MeadWestvaco Foundation.
