Being named the top public college in the South in a widely cited national ranking is a significant achievement for The Citadel. Being so designated for two consecutive years has to be doubly gratifying.

According to this year’s listing from U.S. News & World Report, the military college is succeeding on several levels, including its graduation rate, freshman retention rate, student-faculty ratio, percentage of full-time faculty and alumni giving.

While the magazine rating is hardly definitive, it is widely viewed as an important measure of an institution’s success, and is sure to help the college as it pursues its institutional goals.

As our Wednesday report noted, The Citadel has broken enrollment records in recent years — evidence that high school seniors also think the college is doing something right.

Like being tops in its class.

That ranking might not be as exciting as Saturday’s 23-21 upset over third-ranked Georgia Southern at Johnson Hagood Stadium. But it’s a big-time Bulldog victory, too.
