Lt. Dan weekend for wounded vets on SC coast
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Veterans wounded while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are returning to the South Carolina coast for the Lt. Dan Weekend. About 75 wounded vets and their caretakers are spending the week at Palm Key near Beaufort.
The Lt. Dan Weekend is highlighted by actor-musician Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band playing in Beaufort.
Other events include a second concert featuring bands in which wounded vets play, a golf tournament and Wednesday’s annual banquet for the vets. The event raises money for robotic wheelchairs and therapy for the vets.
Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band gets its name from the character he played in the movie “Forrest Gump” who lost his legs fighting in Vietnam. Much of the 1994 movie was filmed in the Beaufort area.
