Charleston bell-ringing ceremony marks 9/11 anniversary
Charleston marked the 11th aniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks this morning in a remembrance without speeches.
Only the sound of a bagpiper and the ringing of the city’s old fire bell marked the occasion.
The bell was struck 343 times to signify the firefighters lost in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.
Assistant Fire Chief Raymond LLoyd, who organized the event, said he envisioned the ceremony being held every year for at least the next 20 years, as the city paused to remember.
About 70 people, including tourists, office workers and city staffers attended the event, near Meeting and Queen streets.
