Driver flown to hospital after train hits Jeep in St. Stephen
An Amtrak train hit a Jeep trying to cross tracks in St. Stephen today, sending the driver to a hospital, according to the Highway Patrol.
The collision happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. at the Nursery Court crossing, according to the report. The crossing is near U.S. Highway 52 across from Planters Lane.
Peggy Huff, 56, of Bonneau was driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee north on Nursery Court and was hit when she tried to cross the tracks, according to the Highway Patrol. She was wearing a seatbelt and not carrying any passengers.
Huff was flown to Medical University Hospital by helicopter, Berkeley County Public Information Officer Chip Boling said.
Train 90 was carrying 84 passengers from Savannah to Washington, D.C., an Amtrak spokesperson said. Nobody aboard the train was hurt, and passengers continued the trip on buses, she said.
The Highway Patrol is investigating, Cpl. Bob Beres said.
