The Citadel football ranked No. 23; kicker Warren earns SoCon award
The Citadel’s 23-21 upset of Georgia Southern on Saturday has earned the Bulldogs their first national college football ranking since the 2008 season.
The 2-0 Bulldogs are No. 23 in the FCS coaches’ poll announced today. The Citadel also made The Sports Network’s FCS poll at No. 21.
“It’s nice for the program and it’s great for our players to get recognition like that,” coach Kevin Higgins said today. “But we know we have to go out and the next week anyway if you want to keep it.”
The Bulldogs face another ranked team this week, traveling to No. 7 Appalachian State (1-1). The Mountaineers are coming off a 35-27 win over Montana, which dropped from No. 9 to No. 12 after that loss.
Georgia Southern (1-1) slipped from No. 3 to No. 10 after its loss to The Citadel.
Also today, Citadel kicker Thomas Warren, a senior from Bishop England High School, was named the Southern Conference special teams player of the week. Warren booted three field goals against Georgia Southern, including the game-winning 37-yarder with 35 seconds to go.
Warren is the second Bulldog to win a SoCon player of the week award this season. Defensive end Chris Billingslea was the defensive player of the week last week.
