The headmaster at Porter-Gaud school was the victim of an unusual theft Saturday night.

While DuBose Egleston and his wife were sleeping in the house on Albemarle Road near the school, somebody apparently chiseled away a side door panel, crawled inside and stole $12,000 worth of silver from a chest, according to the police report and family members. Egleston told police he discovered the theft and the broken door panel when he got up Sunday morning.

Reached by phone at his office today, Egleston said investigators told him they had never seen a scenario quite like that before.

Egleston told police he often holds school functions and frequently entertains guests at his house.

Charleston police are investigating.
