The Charleston Police Pipes and Drums unit held a ceremony on the Yorktown Sunday to remember first responders who have died saving others since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The unit marched down the pier at Patriots Point to the Yorktown playing bagpipes and drums. Then they went inside for a brief ceremony that concluded with tossing a wreath over the side of the ship into the river.

“I just want to remember all the folks who put themselves in harm’s way so we can remember our freedoms,” said Pipes and Drums Sgt. John Weed, an electrical engineer at SPAWAR.

Families of first responders — including firefighters, police officers, sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical techicians — got free admission to the Yorktown Sunday.

The 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is Tuesday.
