WISE COLUMN: Dollar General eyeing Awendaw for new store
Dollar General hopes to open a new store in Awendaw. It’s eyeing U.S. Highway 17 and Sewee Road in an outparcel near the recently opened Tractor Supply Co. store.
Company spokeswoman Emily Weiss said the company is still performing due diligence but hopes to make an announcement soon. The nearest Dollar General in the area is in McClellanville just up U.S. Highway 17.
The Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based discount chain plans to open 625 new stores this year.
It reported strong second-quarter earnings last week for stores open at least a year with 5.1 percent increase in sales. It’s total sales improved 10.4 percent.
Separately, Dollar General rival Family Dollar last week filed a permit request to build a new discount store near Charleston Southern University in North Charleston.
The location is the southwest corner of University Boulevard and Fernwood Drive, according to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Family Dollar is based in Matthews, N.C. It has more than 7,400 stores and about 31,000 employees in rural and urban markets across 45 states.
Locally, the chain operates about 20 stores, according to its website.
Pain Specialists of Charleston will break ground on its new private-practice medical office at 3 p.m. today in North Charleston.
The new 20,000-square-foot outpatient medical center, founded by medical director Dr. Edward Tavel, will be at 2695 Elms Plantation Blvd.
Berkeley Community Federal Credit Union will snip the ribbon on its new location at 10 a.m. Wednesday at 600 Main St. Extension in Moncks Corner. Serving Berkeley County since 1960, the full-service financial company was previously at 303 N. Live Oak Drive in Moncks Corner.
Jeff Walker recently acquired all three Kingston Cigar shops in the region. They are at 1525 Old Trolley Road in Summerville, 1890 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in West Ashley and 205 N. Goose Creek Blvd. in Goose Creek. Walker is president and CEO of Charleston-based Kolstad Enterprises.
Drayton Campbell recently opened Vivere Interior Design at 162-A Spring St. in downtown Charleston. The full-service firm specializes in commercial, hospitality and residential projects of all scales.
Campbell, a South Carolina native and Converse College graduate, brings eight years of design experience to Vivere, including programming, design and construction of various residential, hospitality, resort, multifamily and corporate projects.
Girls’ night out
Belk’s semiannual “Girls’ Night Out” fashion event is set for 5-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at stores in Citadel Mall and Mount Pleasant Towne Centre.
Look for 20 percent off purchases of sale- and regular-priced women’s apparel, shoes and accessories, including rarely discounted designer brands.
Shoppers also have a chance to win a trip for two to Los Angeles, including $1,000 in spending money and lunch with Adrienne Maloof of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” while enjoying food, drink, fun and more giveaways.
