CHARLOTTE – South Carolina’s youngest delegate is having a blast, enjoying the speeches and networking with young Democrats across the country.

Lauren Bilton, 22, of Columbia, describes the event as “just a huge pep rally,” and first got interested in the job her senior year in high school, when she took an AP United States government class.

Also, she has politics in her genes. Her father William Bilton was president of the Young Democrats of the U.S. when he was 35. (Her family also has roots in Dorchester County, where her uncles run Bilton Ford).

She said she is enjoying the long days that begin with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast and end when parties wind down around 3 a.m. And she hopes her presence here is encouraging her sorority sisters, church friends and other peers might pay more attention to what’s going on because they know she’s here.
