Boeing SC executive to oversee supply chain, operations in Italy

Marco Cavazzoni, the charismatic second-in-command at Boeing South Carolina, is assuming a new international role as part of the airplane manufacturer’s plan to ramp up production of its in-demand 787 Dreamliner.

The vice president and general manager of final assembly and delivery at the North Charleston plant, Cavazzoni’s new title will be vice president of supply chain management and operations for Italy.

“His broad experience with Boeing and doing business in Italy make him perfect fit for that role,” said Boeing South Carolina spokeswoman Candy Eslinger.

It is a new position, she said.

His primary responsibility will be to work closely with the Italian firm Alenia, which makes mid-body fuselage sections for the 787. Those important composite pieces are then shipped to South Carolina for assembly and further refinement before they are delivered to the final assembly plants in North Charleston and Everett, Wash.

“It’s basically ensuring the supply chain health as we increase the production rate to 10 per month,” Eslinger said. “It’s all about strengthening relations.”

Cavazzoni had served in a variety of leadership roles at Boeing before being named to his South Carolina role in November 2009, just after Boeing decided to build a prestigious final assembly plant here.

Gregarious and energetic, Cavazzoni has played the role of emcee at Boeing’s building openings and other milestones and has also been active off-campus.

A former member of Canada’s national swim team, Cavazzoni helped raise $250,000 in private money to help keep North Charleston’s Danny Jones pool open year-round. He has also served as chairman of the South Carolina Research Authority board of trustees
